Dear CHH Resident,

CHH is committed to a Healthier You!

We are writing to you in response to recent changes made by the federal government about recreational cannabis and a new CityHousing Hamilton (CHH) policy about smoking, both cannabis and tobacco, on CHH properties and in CHH units.  

The Cannabis Act October 17, 2018

As you may be aware, the new Cannabis Act will make recreational cannabis (marijuana) legal in Canada on October 17, 2018.

However, we want to high-lite the following restrictions:

·     cannabis is not to be used in public areas – you can only smoke cannabis in your home (unless you are in a smoke-free building)

·     Smoking of tobacco or smoking or vaping of cannabis in CHH common areas including, laundry rooms, hallways, parking garages or within 9 metres of any building entrance or exit is not allowed

·     Exceptions are restricted to indigenous traditional practices and specific medical prescriptions requiring smoking (CHH will review requests to smoke on a case-by-case basis) 

·     Cultivation of maximum of 4 cannabis plants per unit is permitted


CHH and Smoke-Free Living:  New Builds and Retrofits

With the goal of creating healthier living environments, CHH Board of Directors approved a policy in June 2018.   All new or retrofitted CHH properties will be 100% smoke-free living

For example, 500 MacNab Street North, which is a 148-unit residential building, is currently vacant and plans are underway for it to be retrofitted.     Upon completion of the retrofit and when the building reopens, it will be a 100% smoke-free living property.

This means:

·       All apartments, common areas such as laundry rooms, halls, balconies, yards and parking garages will be smoke-free.

·        New or transferring CHH residents who smoke can still live in a smoke-free building, but like all residents, they cannot smoke in the building or their units and must sign a lease that says a breach of the no-smoking clause is grounds for eviction.


CHH and Public Health Partnership

CHH is working with Public Health Services to bring you more information and supports if you want to quit smoking. 

During the winter months staff from Public Health Services and CHH will be visiting CHH properties to provide information to our residents on how to get free nicotine replacement therapy and support.  You can also access program information through   We are here to help you! 


New no-smoking signs will be posted at all CHH properties
